BJP leader Brijpal Teotia was recovering at Noida’s Fortis hospital on Friday after undergoing a surgery for the injuries he suffered in an attack in Ghaziabad.
Teotia was travelling with five others, including his private bodyguards, in a white Mahindra Scorpio when he was attacked around 8pm on Thursday by a group of assailants in a white Toyota Fortuner SUV.
Police said they found the vehicle used in the crime dumped in a forest.
KS Emmanuel, Ghaziabad senior superintendent of police, said: “After the incident, the police cordoned off the area when two of the assailants were trying to escape in an auto and were encountered near Sadab Nagar police post at Modinagar. They fired shots in air and escaped amid cover of darkness, and also left behind a sports bag that contained the ammunitions and automatic weapons.”
The bag contained an AK-47 with its serial number scratched off, two AK-47 magazines, live ammunition, two 9mm factory-made pistols and their ammunitions.
Earlier reports indicated that the attack vehicle used by assailants was registered in Haridwar. However, local police in Haridwar denied this.
“Upon checking, we found that vehicle is registered in Haryana and not in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, as claimed,” said superintendent of police (city), Navneet Bhullar.
Police had cross checked the registration number and chassis of the vehicle with transport authorities.
The politician’s brother, Vikas Teotia, said doctors conducted two surgeries and planned another surgery on Saturday.
Vikas said 32 units of blood were given to Teotia, who sustained four bullet injuries. One bullet pierced into the leader’s body, fracturing his shoulder bone while others only injured him.
”Brijpal’s shoulder bone has been operated on while loss of blood has also been contained. Doctors say that his condition is better,” said Vikas. He said Teotia did not have any personal enmity.
Union minister and Ghaziabad MP general (retd) VK Singh visited Teotia at the hospital at 7:30 am on Friday.
A former Delhi Police constable, Teotia contested the 2012 assembly polls from Muradnagar assembly segment on a BJP ticket, but he lost by a margin of 4,540 votes.
