About 40-50 residents of Karhera in Sahibabad allegedly manhandled Bharatiya Janata Party’s Ghaziabad district president, his gunner and the car driver following a road rage incident late on Sunday night.

After the incident, the police have rounded up several suspects seen in a CCTV footage and have also lodged an FIR under several IPC Sections at Sahibabad police station.

The incident took place around 10pm on Sunday, when BJP’s district president Basant Tyagi was returning home to Loni in his Verna car, along with his gunner Maneesh and his driver Amit, when a Scorpio carrying four to five persons brushed against it.

“It was near Karhera flyover that the Scorpio just brushed our car from behind and they stopped. I told them to leave the issue and that we will get our car repaired. One among the occupants of the Scorpio rang up other men from nearby Karhera village. When we proceeded, nearly 40-50 men arrived. The Scorpio car overtook us and forced us to stop, where the altercation began,” Tyagi said.

“It was only the gunner and the driver who were manhandled during the incident by the mob,” Tyagi added.

Basant Tyagi said that the incident was reported to the office of director general of police and also to deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya who asked the police to initiate action.

According to the police, after checking a CCTV footage installed at the crossing on the road to Hindon air base, they have found that 40-50 men had arrived at the Karhera crossing. They said it was alleged that the mob also tried to rob the carbine of the gunner, who was with Tyagi for security.

“We have rounded up seven men in connection with the incident and are questioning them. The Scorpio car involved in the incident was seized. An FIR for illegal confinement, robbery attempt, rioting, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and assault was lodged. We identified the driver of the Scorpio and another person who was in the car. About 40-50 people are mentioned as unidentified in the FIR. A hunt is launched to arrest the persons involved in the incident,” said Sudhir Tyagi, station house officer, Sahibabad.

On the other hand, a group of residents from Karhera village approached office of senior superintendent of police on Monday and submitted a complaint against Basant Tyagi and station house officer Sudhir Tyagi. In their complaint, they alleged that the SHO allegedly picked up several innocent persons on the behest of the district president and also issued threats following the incident.

“All the villagers are feeling frightened to venture out. Seven of our men were picked up by the police. Some were let off later on. The policemen misbehaved with the villagers. We submitted our complaint to the SSP office and want the innocent people to be released immediately,” said Dharmendra Chauhan, a Karhera resident.
