“We got a call from the hostel in-charge about the incident. His room was locked from the inside. We had to break the door open to enter the room,” Sector 58 station house officer Anil Pratap Singh said.

Rupanshu is a native of Raebareli. The police informed his family about the incident and sent the body for an autopsy. The family has refused any investigation in the matter and have taken his body home for the last rites, police said.

The reason behind the suicide is not clear. “We did not recover any suicide note from his room,” Singh said.

According to the other people living in the hostel, Rupanshu did not appear for an exam in his college on October 28. He has reportedly stayed inside his room since Saturday evening.

“We had an internal exam on October 28, which he did not appear for. His roommate left for his hometown after the exam and Rupanshu was alone ,” said Vipin, a student living in the same hostel. There are 35 other students living in the same hostel.

Vipin said he last saw Rupanshu over dinner on the night of October 28.

“He (Rupanshu) had dinner with us after which he went to his room. He didn’t come out from his room for the entire day on Sunday. I wanted something from his room, so I knocked at his door on Sunday night, but there was no response for a very long time. I peeped through his window and found him hanging from the fan. I immediately raised an alarm. He didn’t have many friends and always kept to himself,” Vipin said.

Hostel manager Vishesh Tyagi told Hindustan Times that Rupanshu had been living at his facility for past three months and mostly remained quiet.

“Rupanshu did not turn up for lunch on Sunday . We assumed that must be sleeping. Later in the evening, the boys found him hanging from the ceiling fan,” Tyagi said.

Vijay Kumar Shrivastava, the father of the deceased, said, “He had come home on Diwali and seemed happy. But for the past two days he was not speaking to us. We do not know what led him to take this extreme step.”
