A 38-year-old employee of a firm at Yamuna Nagar in Haryana was allegedly robbed of Rs14 lakh by armed robbers, who beat him up and also sprayed chilli powder on him, in an autorickshaw at Indirapuram on Tuesday afternoon.

The cashier, Rajesh Kumar, said he was in Ghaziabad to collect cash on behalf of his employer and visited a shop in Indirapuram, after which the incident took place.

According to the police, Rajesh Kumar visited a plywood shop, operated by one Lalit Kumar, in Indirapuram on Tuesday morning. He left the shop around 11.45am and boarded an autorickshaw from near Aditya Mall, in which two passengers were already sitting.

“While the auto was headed towards Vaishali, two more men boarded the vehicle and held the victim at gunpoint. The four men beat him and sprayed chilli powder in his eyes near Vaishali Sector 4 and escaped on two bikes that were following them. They made away with the bag containing the cash. The auto driver also fled with his vehicle,” a police official said.

The incident took place around 12.15pm, after which Rajesh informed the police with the help of passersby. Personnel from the Indirapuram police station and crime branch started the investigation and found that Lalit had deleted the CCTV footage recording of the incident. The police said that the deletion of the footage is suspicious.

“Lalit told us that he deletes the video footage recording frequently. Rajesh told us that he had come to Ghaziabad to collect cash, which was sent to Lalit’s shop from a man in Saharanpur. The cash was to be taken by Rajesh to his employer in Yamuna Nagar. We have registered an FIR and are investigating,” PK Tripathi, station house officer, Indirapuram police station, said.

Rajiv Gupta, the owner of the plywood firm in Yamuna Nagar, said he will comment on the incident once he reaches Ghaziabad.

“Our probe is going on in the case and several teams are investigating from every angle,” said Salmantaj Patil, superintendent of police (city).
