In yet another incident of snatching, a woman was targeted by armed robbers opposite Shyam Park Extension police post in Sahibabad on Friday evening.
However, this time, the guard from a jewellery shop opened fire with his licensed weapon at the fleeing robbers who managed to speed away. Senior police officers said the robbers escaped with a mobile phone and purse containing Rs5,000 from the victim.
According to police, Divya Bhasin had come to market for on Friday when the incident took place. She was targeted by two bike-borne men around 4.30pm at Jindal Chowk in Sahibabad.
The woman is a resident of the same area and personnel from the police post also gave a futile chase. However, Amit Kumar, a guard employed with Shyam Jewelers, saw the robbers fleeing and opened fire.
“Our guard chased the robbers after he saw them fleeing. After running some distance, he opened fire at the bikers but they escaped. The guard was nearly 100 metres from the robbers. The policemen from the police post also chased them but the robbers sped away on their Pulsar motorcycle,” said Sanjeev Soni, owner of Shyam Jewellers.
“Some bits of the incident were also captured on our CCTV camera but the footage is not very clear. Incidents of chain snatching have become regular in this area. Bikers come, rob women and speed away,” he said.
“Our police personnel chased them till Karan Gate area but they sped away. We have ordered for police teams to check suspected persons in the area and have also lodged an FIR into the incident. It is yet to be known whether similar robberies were done by the same men. We are trying to trace them,” said Anup Singh, circle officer, Sahibabad.
On Thursday morning, two bikers robbed a city trader barely 100 metres away from the district police office.
In another incident, two robbers on a bike recently targeted the wife of a former UP minister, Satish Sharma, outside their house at Kavi Nagar and took away her gold chain.
Two similar instances took place within a fortnight at Shalimar Garden and Lajpat Nagar where two women were targeted by bike-borne armed robbers in Ghaziabad. The police have failed to make headway into any of these cases so far.
