Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav gifted a new autorickshaw to Ghaziabad’s only woman driver, Ruby Singhal, who lost her two vehicles in a fire started by a miscreant in Vijay Nagar on the night of January 6.

The CM gifted the autorickshaw to Singhal in Lucknow on Saturday. The regional transport officer of Ghaziabad Mayank Jyoti was also present to expedite the formalities of vehicle registration.

Singhal has been operating rented autorickshaws since the fire but the income was insufficient to support her family. Singhal said she was surprised when she received a call from the Ghaziabad city magistrate’s office around 6pm on Friday, informing her about the CM’s decision and asking her to get ready to leave for Lucknow.

“Around 10pm, a convoy of three cars reached my residence in Vijay Nagar to pick me. The police were present in one car and RTO officials in the other. I left with my husband and two children and reached Lucknow around 6am on Saturday,” Singhal said.

Singhal was received by the CM around 12 noon on Saturday and gifted the new autorickshaw.

A tweet from the CM’s official Twitter handle read: “CM Akhilesh Yadav has provided a new autorickshaw to Ghaziabad’s Ruby Singhal.”

Mayank Jyoti said Singhal will be provided with an NCR-auto permit on reaching Ghaziabad.

“This will help her cover more areas and cater to more passengers. The formalities of the vehicle registration certificate were completed in Lucknow,” he said.

“I cannot express my happiness in words. I am extremely thankful to the chief minister for his gesture. I will now work hard to fulfil the needs of my family,” Singhal said.

The federation of apartment owners’ association at Indirapuram had also donated Rs. 75,000 to Singhal to help her buy a new autorickshaw.
