Congress candidate from Gautam Budh Nagar Loksabha seat Ramesh Chand Tomar on Thursday joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Just a week before the polling day April 10 Tomar's change of loyalty has left Congress embarrassed, and BJP workers cheering.
"Tomar kept us in dark about his plans till today morning, ditched the party in a shocking and shameful manner. He met BJP chief Rajnath Singh in Delhi office today morning to lick BJP boots. And he was misleading Congress workers by saying he is in election commission office to seek election cancellation. Tomar has betrayed not only the party but also local workers," told Dhirendra Singh Congress UP spokesperson on Thursday morning.
Tomar's joining BJP were doing rounds on Wednesday leaving Congress in utter shock. However, countering the rumors, Tomar staged a press conference on Wednesday late night in Noida's sector 36 terming rumors of his joining BJP as part of big conspiracy by rivals as he was winning Gautam Budh Nagar (Noida) seat with huge margin.
"Today morning he left Noida office to Delhi, misleading workers saying he is seeking cancellation of April 10 election, and will meet election commission. But instead went to meet Rajnath Singh, BJP chief in Delhi. He is likely to show-up at Modi rally In Ghaziabad," said Alok Singh Congress spokesperson in Gautam Budh Nagar unit.
On the other hand, a cheering BJP candidate from Gautam Budh Nagar Mahesh Sharma announced that Tomar has joined BJP. Tomar's dumping Congress has boosted BJP's prospects of winning this seat because Rajput's four lakh votes are likely to swing towards BJP at this seat.
Also, since Tomar has been a four time MP from Ghaziabad on BJP ticket, the move will benefit BJP Ghaziabad candidate general (rtd) VK Singh too. There are about 3 lakh Rajput votes at Ghaziabad seat speeding on 200 villages in Dhaulana and Hapur segments. Tomar was MP from Hapur-Ghaziabad seat four times, when he was in BJP from 1991 to 2004. He had joined Congress in 2009, when BJP denied him ticket from Ghaziabad. Tomar had joined Congress in 2009, and lost Loksabha election from Gautam Budh Nagar seat. Congress again fielded him from Gautam Budh Nagar seat in 2014 elections.
"He left Congress because he realised he is going to lose elections because of Narendra Modi wave. But his action will trouble the Congress the most, and damage Tomar's credibility," said a Congress worker.
