A 13-month-old boy was rescued 30 hours after he was kidnapped from his house at Nauraspur in Tronica City area of Ghaziabad, and handed over to a Delhi businessman who had two daughters and was desperate to have a son.

The police quickly cracked the case and revealed that the child, Yash, was sold to a resident of Shakarpur in Delhi for Rs 3 lakh. Several middlemen were involved in the case, police said.

The boy was rescued during early hours on Monday and five accused arrested. Police said that Paras Jain, who allegedly ‘bought’ Yash from Patparganj-based nurse Anita Vij, wanted a son as he had two daughters aged 13 and 11. Jain operates a bakery in Delhi. His wife Archana is absconding.

“Paras and his wife came in touch with Anita three-four months back and she promised that she will get them a boy if there is one available. Anita later got in touch with a Ghaziabad-based couple for the job. The couple roped in their acquaintances Rahul and his friend Sunil to abduct the child. The couple handed over the abducted child to Anita on the night of September 10. She called up Jain and handed over the child in return of Rs 3 lakh,” said Rakesh Kumar Pandey, superintendent of police (rural).

Anita, 45, said that she worked as a nurse with a private nursing home around 10 years back. She is unmarried and the Ghaziabad couple Chandvir and Poonam is also childless.

“Our teams picked up the accused and recovered the boy safely. The five accused were produced before court on Monday. We will soon take them on remand and interrogate whether more children were sold away to others in a similar manner,” Pandey added.

Five of those arrested include, Paras Jain, 41, Anita Vij, 45, Chandvir Singh, 38, and wife Poonam, 35, and Rahul, 22, – the man who abducted the child along with his friend Sunil. Police said that Sunil, 21, is absconding.

The officials said after Anita allegedly received Rs 3 lakh from Jain, she paid Rs 75,000 to Chandvir and Poonam. The couple kept Rs 30,000 and paid the rest to Rahul and Sunil.

After the boy was kidnapped, the police got a tip-off from local residents that the boy was last seen with Rahul and Sunil. Rahul and Chandvir knew each other as they hail from Phugana in Muzaffarnagar. Sunil on the other hand, visits Nausarpur to meet his brother-in-law, who is a neighbour of the boy’s parents.

After the police teams nabbed Rahul from Muzaffarnagar on September 11, he revealed the plot. Several teams raided the Gagan Vihar residence of Chandvir and Poonam and nabbed them too. The couple helped police trace Anita late on the night of September 11. She called up Jain along with the child to Patparganj from where police picked up Paras Jain and recovered the child around 2am on Monday.
