Ravikant Singh, the district magistrate who had given a clean chit to suspended IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal, was transferred by the UP government on Tuesday night.
Singh, who was Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate, has been put on the ‘wait list’. Though no official reason has been given for Singh’s transfer, it comes after some villagers at Sorkha village in Sector 115 in Noida on Tuesday protested against a demolition drive in the area and pelted stones and set ablaze police vehicles. Singh had reached the site and pacified the mob.
In his report over the incident at Kadalpur village that led to the suspension of Durga Nagpal, Singh had supported his junior’s claim that the wall of an under-construction mosque was demolished by the villagers and not district officials.
Singh had taken charge of Gautam Budh Nagar district on March 4 this year.
Unnao DM Hira Lal Gupta will replace Singh, who is expected to take charge on Thursday.
When asked about the reasons for the transfer of Singh with the reference to the demolition issue, Gupta told HT: “That was no more an issue. I will maintain communal harmony.”
Regarding the permission for construction of a mosque at Kadalpur village, Gupta said he would work according to the law.
He said that action against illegal mining would be intensified. The Akhilesh Yadav government was under intense pressure after the suspension of Nagpal.
It was alleged that the government targeted her because she had been taking action against the sand mafia.Speculation was rife that Singh would be transferred soon after he confirmed what Nagpal had said in her defence.
However, the intense media glare that the suspension of Nagpal attracted made the government wait, sources said.
