An excise inspector was shot at by two bike-borne persons at his office in Greater Noida on Monday morning. The inspector received injuries on his thigh after which he collapsed on the ground. He was later rushed to a private hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

According to police, the incident took place around 9 am, when excise inspector Virju Prasad Gupta reached his office in Sector Gama-1 in Kasna.

“Two bike-borne men approached the excise inspector on the pretext of asking for an address. As the officer stopped to listen to them, the pillion rider took out a firearm from his bag and opened fire at the officer. The accused immediately fled the spot as the officer collapsed on ground,” said Suniti, superintendent of police (Rural).

On hearing gunshot, other excise personnel who were present inside the office rushed out and found Gupta lying on the ground. He was immediately rushed to private hospital, where he was operated upon.

Rakesh Kumar Singh, district excise officer, told Hindustan Times that 31-year-old Gupta was posted in Dadri only a couple of months back and joined excise department in 2015.

Singh said, “The bullet pierced through his left thigh. An operation was performed on the officer and is recuperating in ICU.”

Police is suspecting that the accused might be involved in illegal liquor trade in the district and targeted the inspector because of constant raids by the excise department against such illegal activities.

Suniti said, “Our team is scanning CCTVs installed in the area to obtain clues about the assailants. A case has been registered against unknown assailants in this regard, and further investigations are on.”

Lately, Gautam Budh Nagar police and district excise department has launched intensive drive against illegal liquor trafficking in the district and has nabbed many persons.

Last month, a mob launched attacked on a police party in Dankaur and freed one of the liquor smugglers from their clutches. Four policemen were injured in the incident.
