The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to make provisions for their Master Plan and other major roads under the project for the alignment of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME). The project is proposed for the widening of NH-24.
The DME is spread in four parts, including a stretch from UP Gate to Dasna, in Ghaziabad. The route has several major housing hubs and upcoming hi-tech cities located next to the highway.
“During a meeting, we requested NHAI officials to incorporate (in the project) the traffic from our roads towards the DME. We have proposed seven points. These include Master Plan roads and some roads that are yet to be constructed. We have requested the NHAI to incorporate the points to allow smooth flow of traffic from our areas under their proposed widening plan,” said Vijay Kumar Yadav, GDA vice-chairman.
NHAI officials apprised the GDA about 13 places where vehicular underpasses (VUP) will be developed under the second part of the DME project.
Under its proposal, the GDA has mentioned the 45-metre Master Plan Road near river Hindon. The road is yet to be constructed and there is no provision of an underpass, officials said.
GDA officials have also requested the NHAI to shift a proposed toll plaza near Lal Kuan further towards the Columbia Asia crossing to avoid jams. The proposed toll plaza may witness congestions due to jams at Lal Kuan, officials said.
GDA officials said there was no provision for an underpass for a 45-metre Master Plan Road coming from Vivekanand Nagar Industrial Area and merging with NH-24.
“Underpasses are also required near the Hi-Tech city townships which are under construction. We expect nearly 5 lakh people to move to the area in the next few years. Here, we have a provision of two—45-metre and 30-metre— roads. Our point is to allow the city traffic to merge easily with the DME roads so that there is no congestion,” Yadav said.
A senior NHAI official said, “We have already made provisions for major roads in Ghaziabad and incorporated them under the DME project. We have told the GDA that any further changes can be considered during the construction stages. The project is already sanctioned. If we make any further changes at this point, it will get further delayed.”
