The police on Wednesday arrested two persons, a private developer and his accomplice, for gunning down a 32-year-old man over his alleged relationship with a woman staffer that the builder didn’t approve of. While the woman is Hindu, the victim was from the Muslim community.

Asif, who was married with two minor children, was gunned down outside Gaur Mall in the posh Raj Nagar District Centre on the evening of August 4. Sources said he went shopping with Shivani, the woman staffer he allegedly had a relationship with.

According to the police, Shivani’s employer, Dinesh Sharma, arrived at the mall along with two accomplices and fired four bullets at the victim. He died at the scene, the police said.

Dinesh and Lucky, one of his accomplices from Hoshiyarpur in Punjab, were arrested. Police said Dinesh did not approve of Shivan’s relationship with Asif, who owned an electrical panel unit at Hindon Vihar. Sharma said he was close to Shivan’s family and tried to persuade her to snap ties with Asif.

Shivani had been working with Dinesh as an accountant for the past three years.

“She is Brahmin and so am I. Her father, who died two years ago, was also a priest. I told her several times to snap ties with Asif, but she did not pay heed. Asif would often visit my office to pick her up and their relationship grew. Since I couldn’t talk her out of the relationship, I decided to get rid of him. I planned the murder nearly 15-20 days ago with two of my friends,” Sharma said.

“We had been looking for them for the last 15 days and finally managed to gun him down,” Sharma told police.

The police said that they have recovered the .30 calibre pistol which was used to kill Asif and the two-wheeler used by Dinesh and Lucky. They said they are also trying to trace Rajiv Kumar, the third accused in the case who is on the run.

“On the day of the incident, Shivani left her office near NH-24 in the evening and was to meet Asif at the mall. Asif arrived in his (Mahindra) XUV, while Shivani reached the mall on her scooty. The trio, who had been waiting outside the mall for more than an hour, saw the couple stepping out after shopping. As Shivani was seeing off Asif, the trio arrived near his XUV and fired several rounds on him,” Neeraj Kumar Singh, station house officer, Kavi Nagar police station, said.

Following the incident, Dinesh and Lucky fled on their two-wheeler, while Rajiv fled on his bike. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed outside the mall.

“Shivani dragged the profusely bleeding Asif to an auto and took him to a hospital. However, he succumbed to his wounds. Her clothes were soaked with blood,” Singh said.

Shivani told the police that she had been in a relationship with Asif for the past 14 years and also purchased a property together. Despite her relationship, she did not object to Asif’s marriage with another woman.

The police have booked Dinesh, Lucky and Rajiv for murder with common intention under the Indian Penal Code at Kavi Nagar police station.
