In a case of alleged ‘honour killing,’ a 22-year-old man was brutally murdered by the family of a 20-year-old woman after both had eloped for a night on April 13 and returned a day later with a resolve to get married.
The couple had got engaged a year back but the woman’s family broke the engagement two months later.
Ravi Kumar was brutally stabbed at Maharajpur in Ghaziabad on April 15 evening by six people, allegedly led by the woman’s father Ved Ram, brother Golu and three uncles, Subhash, Kuldeep and Sandeep, and others.
The victim and the accused families are neighbours and hail from Rampur and Firozabad districts, respectively.
“His throat was slashed by a large knife. He suffered a deep cut and the head was left joining by only part of the skin. Apart from this, they inflicted stab wounds on his stomach and fled the scene of crime. They were furious after my brother-in-law and the woman fled for a night together on April 13 and returned a day later,” said Subhash Kumar, the victim’s brother-in-law.
“After she returned the next morning, she said she had gone with Ravi and would marry him. However, Ravi did not return along with her. Her family reached a compromise with us and said that they will not be seen together any further. They had earlier got engaged but later broke the engagement without any reason. But both were in a love and were not willing to get separated. Despite the compromise, her family attacked Ravi who later succumbed to his injuries,” Subhash added.
The victim’s family said that on the day of the incident, the women’s family called Ravi in the evening and attacked him in a planned manner.
After a complaint, the police registered a case of rioting and attempt to murder but later added the section for murder after Ravi died.
“We have made several arrests in the case. Some of the absconding will be arrested soon. Teams have been formed to arrest the remaining accused. The couple had fled for a day and it did not go well with the woman’s family,” said Salmantaj Patil, superintendent of police (city).
