A one-and-a-half-year-old girl died after falling into an open drain in Sector 6 in Vaishali on Saturday afternoon. Her father, Raghu, is a security guard at one of the houses in the area while her mother Pushpa works as a domestic help. The victim was their only child.

The incident occurred at around 1pm when the girl, Jhanvi, was playing on the street with a ball. Her parents were at home at the time as her mother was cooking and Raghu was off-duty. After some time, when they could not find her anywhere in the street, they got worried and started calling out for her.

“I had seen her playing at around 12 pm and gone inside the house. While we were looking for her, we found her ball floating in the nearby drain. When we went closer, we found her in the drain” said Jhanvi’s father.

She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Police said that the parents have not filed a complaint in the matter. “We were informed about the incident by mediapersons, after which we reached the spot. However, the family has not lodged any complaint into the matter,” said Gorakhnath Yadav, station house officer (SHO) of the Indirapuram police station.

The incident left the residents of the area shocked and many soon reached the victim’s house to console the family.

“This drain used to have a boundary wall two years ago, but a part of it collapsed some time back when a tree fell on it. Since then, we have made various complaints to the Ghaziabad municipal corporation to repair the wall but no action was taken,” said Darshan Lal Chamoli, president of the Sector 6 Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA), Vaishali.

The municipal corporation could not be reached for comment..
