The Greater Noida police said it arrested a sharpshooter belonging to the Anil Dujana gang after a gunfight on Tuesday afternoon.

The alleged sharpshooter, Aneet Bhati alias Tota, sustained a bullet injury in the leg and was nabbed by the police, but two others accompanying him managed to flee, police said. Two policemen were also injured in the shootout, they added.

Bhati has been admitted to the district hospital. The police said he has multiple cases of loot, extortion, kidnapping and murder against him and carries a reward of Rs15,000 on his arrest.

Head constable Tejpal Singh and constable Varun Veer Singh of the anti-extortion cell were also injured while chasing the men as they tried to escape, police said.

“The anti-extortion cell of the police received information about the whereabouts of Bhati and his accomplices and came to know that they were planning something. The cell, along with Kasna police, immediately formed a team and searched a house in Junpat village where the men were hiding, around 11am on Tuesday,” said Suniti, superintendent of police (rural), Gautam Budh Nagar.

“Trying to flee, the gangsters opened fire at the police party, which returned the fire. Bhati was shot in leg and overpowered by the police. However, his two accomplices managed to escape,” she said.

She added that the police team chased the two till the ATS roundabout where a second, brief gunfight took place between the police team and the two men, but they managed to give police the miss. Multiple rounds were fired from both sides, the SP said.

“We have been continuously monitoring the situation and a wide search has been launched to nab the absconders,” Suniti said. The alleged sharpshooter, Bhati, is a 28-year-old repeat offender involved in many cases. He was arrested by the Surajpur police in July 2015 and is also alleged to be involved in the killing of Samajwadi Party (SP) functionary and Dadupur village headman Harendra Nagar in 2015.

He was also involved in a shootout in Chhapraula village along Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad border and his name also figures in a 2015 double-murder case in Junpat village, from where he was arrested on Tuesday. In the case, more than 10 people launched an attack and allegedly killed two people despite police protection.

According to the police, Bhati belongs to the gang run by Anil Dujana, an alleged gangster from Dujana village in Greater Noida with over two dozen criminal cases lodged against him. These cases include those of murder, attempt to murder, smuggling and other serious crimes.

While he is currently in Banda jail, police said his gang members are still trying to carry out extortion activities in his name.
