Passersby broke the windshield and glass windows of the bus. The driver fled the spot after the incident.

A woman died and her husband grievously injured on being run over by a bus on Tuesday morning in Delta-1 Sector of Kasna in Greater Noida. Passersby blocked traffic at the intersection for an hour, demanding the arrest of the bus driver.

The couple, Babita Singh of Bijnour, and Golu, was on a motorcycle when a speeding bus ran them over near the Indian Oil intersection around 8.15am.

Babita died on the spot while Golu was grievously injured in the accident. The middle-aged couple was residents of Ghirondi village in Greater Noida. Golu worked with a private company and Babita was a homemaker. The driver of the bus was the only person in the vehicle and he fled the spot following the incident.

“We received information that an accident took place near the Indian Oil intersection at 8.15am. We immediately reached the spot and found that the woman had died. We rushed the injured person to Kailash Hospital, which is in the vicinity,” Sudhir Tyagi, station house officer, Kasna police station, said.

Following the incident, an enraged mob surrounded the bus and broke the windshield and glass. They also blocked traffic at the intersection for more than an hour, disrupting traffic movement.

“A group of 20-25 people had blocked the intersection demanding justice for the deceased. It took us a while to calm them and we finally managed to remove the blockade and resume traffic movement. We did not use any force on the public,” Tyagi said.

Police said that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination and they are on the lookout for the driver. “We seized the bus for investigation and registered a case of negligent driving. We are looking for the driver,” Tyagi said.
