The 40-year-old city president of Hindu Yuva Vahini, a Hindu youth group, was shot at a weekly market in Vijay Nagar on Thursday night.

The police said one of the accused had an altercation with the victim, Rakesh Kori alias Bobby, over a space reserved for a shop at the market.

The police said he was allegedly shot by one Mukesh Kumar and his accomplices at the Thursday weekly market near the Gaushala railway crossing.

Following the shooting, those present at the spot beat up Mukesh and another accused, Nikhil, and the duo was admitted to the MMG District Hospital. Sources said Mukesh had to be rushed to Delhi for treatment late in the night as his condition too is critical.

“The bullet hit Kori on the shoulder and did not damage his heart. He was rushed to a private hospital. His condition is critical due to heavy blood loss and he will have to undergo an operation. We have lodged a case of attempt to murder against the accused and have detained three persons,” Salman Taj, superintendent of police, Ghaziabad, said.

Officials said Kori and Mukesh had a disagreement over the reserved shop space but reached a compromise two days ago.

“When I reached the scene of crime, those present told me about the previous fight between the two parties and the reason behind the incident,” Himanshu Kumar, a family friend of Kori’s, said.
