While leaving for Odisha, Linkan Subudhi promised her students that she will be back soon. Fifteen days after she was brutally attacked for trying to rescue a minor girl student from being forcibly married in Noida, Subudhi was discharged on September 30, and she left for home later.
A software engineer and social activist Subudhi said, “I want all my students to be mentally strong. They should always fight for justice. I will be back soon.”
Working for the Noida chapter of the NGO, Aid India, since 2008 as a project coordinator, Subudhi taught children from the slum area of Sector 16 in the morning and then went to work. “The attack just hurt me physically, but it cannot deter me from helping people,” said the 25-year old.
The incident has only made her stronger. “I am really looking forward to meeting all my students. Life is a roller coaster ride and such incidents just make you stronger,” she said.
For Subudhi, life is a balancing act between her social work and professional life. “To spend more time with my students, I had asked my office management to change my timings. I taught from 10am to 2pm, reached office at 3pm and worked till 12.30 am,” she said.
According to the police, Subudhi was attacked by the 15-year-old girl’s prospective groom and his mother, who allegedly stabbed and hit her with bricks, causing serious head injuries. The Noida police have arrested the mother but the groom is still absconding. Subudhi said child marriages happen regularly.
A steady stream of high-profile visitors came to meet and commend her for the act when the attack was highlighted by the media.
A leading Supreme Court lawyer and human rights activist has also sought National Human Rights Commission’s intervention in this case.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik too had condemned the brutal assault and directed his government to ensure that Subudhi gets complete medical care.
