A 25-year-old jeweller was shot dead in front of his residence at Dadri area on Thursday morning, police said. The incident occurred at about 8 am when a Khari Kuan resident Varun Verma was walking in front of his house. Two persons came on a bike and shot him multiple times. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, police said.
“One of the attackers was identified as Suraj, a local resident who was having a rivalry with the deceased. According to witnesses, Suraj came with one accomplice on a bike and pumped four bullets into Varun before fleeing from the spot. Varun collapsed and died,” said Anurag Singh, deputy superintendent of police, Dadri.
The police said Varun worked as a jeweller at main market of Dadri and he was having an old rivalry with Suraj over some monetary issue.
“Prima facie it looks like a sophisticated illegal pistols are used in the crime as the suspect or his family does not hold any valid arms license. Some empty bullet casings were recovered from the spot. An FIR against Suraj and an unidentified person was registered at Dadri police station. He was found absconding from his residence. A manhunt was launched to arrest him. A police team is conducting raids at his hideouts and also trying to identify his accomplice,” said Singh.
Body of the deceased was sent for postmortem, reports of which are awaited. A number of family members of the deceased gathered at the police station demanding arrest of the culprit.
“It seems a case of murder due to personal enmity as the suspects did not snatch anything from the deceased. We have sought footage of all CCTV cameras installed at the locality to find out the escape route of the suspects. Neighbouring police stations were alerted about the suspects and barricades were put at bordering areas,” said Singh.
