A 40-year-old man who has alleged been part of a firing incident and threatening a contractor was arrested by the police from Dadri on Thursday morning.

The police identified the accused as Balveer Bhati, alias Babbal. He was arrested near a railway line in Dadri while he was waiting to meet an accomplice. Bhati has been absconding since May 16, the police said.

Circle officer (Dadri), Piyush Kumar Singh, said, “Bhati was among the five people who had threatened the daily wagers employed by a contractor to stop construction of a warehouse. The men had opened several rounds of fire and construction was stopped.”

The police said that the complainant, Anurag Garg, was being threatened by Balveer and Manjeet, every day, to stop construction of the warehouse and meet Kulveer Bhati, the main accused in the shooting incident. The complainant alleged that he was asked to pay Rs 20 lakh to undertake the construction.

During questioning, the police traced the Maruti Swift Dzire car used in the crime to Balveer. The police had announced Rs5,000 for his arrest. A senior officer said that Balveer has been allegedly involved in extorting money from contractors in Greater Noida.

The circle officer said that the main accused in the firing incident, Kulveer Singh Bhati, is also absconding and the Gautam Budh Nagar police has announced Rs1 lakh for his arrest.

“There are more than seven cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion registered against Kulveer Singh Bhati. His brother Randeep Bhati is in judicial custody and Kulveer is operating the gang,” the circle officer said.

Earlier, the brothers, Balveer and Randeep, extorted money from people in Greater Noida who were starting a new business after installing an industrial unit or undertaking a construction project. After Randeep’s arrest, Balveer took over the extortion business, the police said.
