Two people posing as policemen duped an elderly woman of her gold chain at Sector 15 on Tuesday morning. The victim, Ramditti Devi, 60, of Sector 15 was going to buy some grocery when a man stopped her.
“The complainant said a man told her that a policeman, standing in plainclothes, was calling her at the corner of the road. When she went to meet him he asked her why she was flaunting a gold chain. He told her to read the newspapers as a number of chain snatching incidents are happening in the locality and many women were attacked,” said Amarnath Yadav, station house officer, Sector 20 police station.
The victim agreed to his suggestions and took off her chain. However, he insisted that she wrap her gold chain in a paper, police said.
“She said the man took her gold chain to wrap it in a piece of paper and returned it to her. When she reached home, she realised that there was a steel chain in the paper. The suspects had switched the gold chain with a steel one,” said Yadav.
The victim called the police and a case was registered against unidentified persons at Sector 20 police station. “We are analyzing footage from CCTV cameras in the locality to identify the suspects. The beat constables are alerted about such a gang that specifically targets elderly women during morning hours. The suspects will be nabbed soon,” said Yadav.
