If the officials of the Noida authority are to be believed, the monsoon this year is not going to cause water-logging in the city as it had in the previous years.

The Noida authority has identified 20 locations and 6 underpasses which maximum waterlogging takes place. The water works department of Noida authority has claimed that they, along with health department officials, are taking steps to ensure that residents do not face any trouble during the monsoon.

Places such as Sector 11, A & H blocks of Sector 12, B block of Sector 19, C block of Sector 27, pocket C1 to C5 of Sector 31, pocket 6 of Sector 31, Parkview Apartment of Sector 29, B 10 Udaygiri in Sector 34, Sector 35 and Salarpur village have been identified as low-lying areas.

Noida authority has set up a round-the-clock waterlogging control room through which residents can get in touch with officials and register complaints.

Contact numbers of area project engineers and other officials will be made public. “Ours will be a 24x7 service and people can approach the control room at any time if they face any waterlogging problems. A helpline number will be provided so that people can utilise our services,” said Samakant Shrivastava, senior project engineer, water works department.

But residents are sceptical. “A visit to some parts of Sector 63 is a nightmare during the monsoon. Even the slightest shower makes the area inundated. Visitors to factories in some blocks have to wade through knee-deep water. Things cannot change unless the road level is raised and proper stormwater drains are built. Pumping out water is a temporary measure and not a permanent solution,” said SN Singh, a resident of Sector 12.

Authority officials are also trying to have a better coordination between all the departments concerned. “All the officials have been asked to keep senior authorities in the loop to have a better coordination. Waterlogging control room will play an important role in keeping in touch with all required officials when needed,” Shrivastava said.

There are permanent water pumps in areas wherein water logging is recurring problem. Movable water pumps will be used to remove water from places where there are no such pumps installed.

Authority officials will be available round-the-clock during the rains and the department is giving them an umbrella, torch, raincoat and boots. “We will be providing all required equipment and facilities to make their performance better,” Shrivastava said.

The Noida authority is also in touch with the irrigation department to keep waterlogging in check. Project engineers will act as nodal officers in their respective areas.

Underpasses such as the one near Rajnigandha crossing, Sector 18, DND flyover near Sector 16 A, Noida City Centre near Sector 32, NH-24 near Sector 62, go underwater every year. The authority’s administrative building in Sector 6 is also in low-lying area. “We have arranged for pumps to keep keep underpasses above water,” Shrivastava said.
