A domestic help who had allegedly stolen jewellery worth Rs30-Rs40 lakh from his employer’s house in Noida was held on Thursday. The accused has been identified as 21-year-old Rahul Kumar Singh, of Nalanda in Bihar.
The accused was working as a domestic help at Dhruv Kapur’s house in Sector 30. None of the family members were at home on July 1 when Rahul allegedly broke open the cupboard in the bedroom and made away with gold ornaments and Rs10,000.
Dhruv had gone to work while his wife was out station. The police said that the couple also had a cook in their employment but he did not have any role in the crime.
Following the theft, Rahul had to flee before Dhruv’s wife returned, the police said. As the woman was to return on July 2, Rahul said that he had to go home due to some family problems and had taken Rs5,000 as an advance on his salary. Dhruv’s wife found the jewellery missing on her return and a complaint was lodged with the police.
After Dhruv lodged a complaint with the Sector 20 police, a team was constituted on the orders of senior superintendent of police (SSP) Love Kumar to investigate the matter. The police put Rahul’s phone on surveillance to trace him and located him to Jiyar village in Nalanda district of Bihar, his home town.
A police team was sent to Bihar and Rahul was arrested from his house. On Wednesday, Rahul was transferred to Noida and was produced at the local court. Gold ornaments and other valuables worth around Rs30 lakh have been recovered from Rahul.
“We arrested Rahul from his home town in Bihar. We had created a dedicated team to crack this case. We have recovered most of the valuables but are trying to ascertain if he had sold some of the jewellery,” said Anil Kumar Shai, station house officer, Sector 20 police station.
Rahul was working with the family since December 2016. The police suspect that Rahul had stolen the jewellery in instalments and had decided to flee before Dhruv’s wife returned.
