The Gautam Budh Nagar district administration and police on Friday roped in the national disaster response force (NDRF) to conduct a search of the four-storey building that was gutted in a fire for more bodies.

Six employees of a factory that deals with the packaging of CFLs were burnt to death in a fire that engulfed the building in Noida’s Sector 11 on Wednesday.

On Friday, the family of a company director, Sanjoy Das, identified his body by the help of a ring that he used to wear, according to a family friend, Atul Thakur, of Prateek Laurel apartment complex in Sector 120.

“On the basis of photos in possession of his wife, rings in the picture and on the body are similar. The photos helped in identifying Das’ body. The family will cremate the body on Saturday,” he said.

Dinesh Yadav, superintendent of police (city), said, “Earlier, Das’s wife was in a dilemma over identifying the body, but today, she came up to us with photos and identified Das’ body by the ring. One body is left to be identified. I suspect it to be of a trucker who was visiting the company.”

Police said it will call the man’s family.

“Our teams had successfully searched the ground floor and the three floors above it till Thursday morning, but we could not comb the basement as it was filled with debris and water. The water used to douse the fire had filled the basement. We needed an expert team to comb the basement as our teams are not suited for this job,” Yadav said.

Yadav on Thursday evening had written to the district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar, NP Singh, seeking the help of NDRF.

The district magistrate asked the NDRF personnel to conduct a search in the basement to ascertain if there were any bodies there. The basement was being used to store electrical products.

A 35-member NDRF team from neighbouring Ghaziabad, along with the dog squad, cutter machines and specialised equipment reached the site at noon.

“The team conducted a search operation in the basement for about seven hours. The operation was not easy because there is a large amount of debris and water inside the basement area. Till 7pm, the team did not find anything. However, our search operation will continue on Saturday as well, to cover all the portions of the basement,” Rakesh Raka, head of Gautam Budh Nagar disaster management cell, said.

The NDRF team was supposed to search the site on Thursday, but their visit was delayed as the police, officials of the fire department and the administration were busy with state industrial development minister Satish Mahana’s visit.
