Noida: Jewar MLA seeks reinstatement of panchayat system in Gautam Budh Nagar

Singh, along with his delegation of village ‘pradhans’, demanded the reinstatement of panchayat system in the district.

In an effort to draw the attention of Uttar Pradesh government towards invalidation of panchayat elections in Greater Noida villages, Jewar member of legislative assembly (MLA) Thakur Dhirendra Singh met chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday with a group of delegates.

At the meet, Singh cited the issue of Noida authority applying industrial act in the district in 2015 to invalidate panchayat elections and called it a ‘murder of democracy’. In 2015, the Samajwadi Party government had invoked Section 12A of the Industrial Act to invalidate panchayat elections in the villages of Gautam Budh Nagar. According to Section 12 A, holding panchayat elections is not necessary for industrial towns.

“By applying Industrial Act to the district and doing away with the panchayat system, the previous government had attempted to choke democracy. The day-to-day problems of the common man have only increased in the absence of the panchayat system as he has nowhere to go,” said Singh, in his memorandum to CM Yogi.

Singh, along with his delegation of village ‘pradhans’, demanded the reinstatement of panchayat system in the district.

“To save the democracy, it is necessary that for the democratic process of elections to be reinstated. Both Panchayat Raj Act and Industrial Act should be considered by the chief minister,” he said.

While interacting with the press, Singh said that CM Yogi assured the delegation of justice on the issue.

Singh said he also discussed ways to improve the district and drew the CM’s attention towards depleting infrastructure and education standards of Gautam Budh Nagar University. “The CM has assured us of all efforts to turn Gautam Budh Nagar University into an international institute where youth from across UP can avail of skill education and moral values,” Singh said.
