Thousands of commuters had a harrowing time as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation shut the Noida City Centre metro station for eight hours on Sunday for repair work.

Metro services were disrupted from 6am to 2pm on Sunday due to the repair work on a pillar. This was the second round of repair work being carried out on the pillar; the first was undertaken from October 12 to October 14.

The second round was targeted at strengthening the internal repairs undertaken on the girders, said a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson.

A large numbers of commuters were not aware about the repair work and turned up at the station. Free shuttle services were provided by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation from the Golf Course metro station to the Noida City Centre station.

“We were not aware of the repair work. We were later informed that the services were only running till Golf course. It took us some time to reach our destination,” said Vivek Tyagi, one of the commuters.

The Noida City Centre station has been undergoing repair activity for more than a fortnight now.

A high-level inquiry committee constituted by the Delhi Metro had found that increased passenger weight on the platform had led to the sagging of the structure.

A part of the platform at the station had developed cracks, prompting Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to undertake emergency repairs.
