The Noida authority has decided to open the city’s first multilevel car parking facility in Sector 18 to the public on October 2.

The Sector 18 car parking facility is expected to address traffic congestion issue in and around Sector 18, the city’s biggest commercial hub.

The Noida authority chief executive officer (CEO) Amit Mohan Prasad on Sunday inspected the multilevel car parking facility in Sector 18 to check progress at the site.

“On August 4, we had a meeting in Sector 6 office to discuss the opening of the Sector 18 parking facility. We are likely to float a tender this week to select an operator for managing operations of the parking facility. We aim to open this facility to the public on October 2,” the CEO said.

The eight-level parking facility is expected to accommodate over 3,000 cars. Work on the Sector 18 parking lot was started on July 22, 2013, and it was set a deadline of July 2015. The authority failed to complete the parking facility as per the schedule because the contractor had stopped work midway.

In May 2015, the Noida authority had partially opened paid parking on two levels while the building was still under construction. However, KR Chitra, a resident, moved the Allahabad high court in September 2015 and obtained a stay on the ground that it was unsafe to use the building for parking while construction is in progress.

Disposing of the matter on February 4, 2017, the high court directed the Noida authority to complete the project fast and not allow parking until the work is finished.

“We are yet to finalise the tariffs for parking vehicles at this facility. We will select an operator as per norms. We want to open the facility to motorists so that we can address traffic congestion issues that trouble visitors and traders in this market at the earliest,” said Prasad.

Parking area in Sector 18 market is filled to capacity at most times and vehicles often spill onto the roads, causing inconvenience to visitors and traders, particularly during the weekend.

“Pedestrians face problems walking on the roads inside Sector 18 market due to cars being parked on the roads. In the absence of parking space in this sector, we are losing business because visitors do not prefer to visit here,” Yogendra Singh, a trader in the Sector 18 market, said.

“We are laying the roof of the last floor of this parking. Around 7% work on this parking remains to be completed. We hope to finish it as soon as possible,” SC Mishra, project engineer of the Noida authority, said.
