The Noida authority on Monday said that it likely to issue notices to malls, shopping centers, commercial towers, group housing apartments and other highrise buildings, which has lifts with poor maintenance mechanism in place.

The decision was taken a day after a six member Delhi family was struck in a city's high-end restaurant's lift for 2 hours in posh sector 26. The family were in restaurant for an engagement party, when incident took place. When police failed to provide timely help, restaurant staff somehow managed to pull out the family that includes a retired DRDO scientist, 3 women and 2 children after two hours said official.

"The authority is likely to charge penalty and take appropriate legal action against errant realtors or building owners, who with poor maintenance mechanism put people's lives at risk. We will examine the pattern as to how they conduct maintenance of lift, and whether a realtor or building owner adheres to laid down safety norms or not. Stern action will be taken whosoever will be found guilty," said Manoj Kumar Rai officer on special duty (OSD), the Noida authority.

Officials maintained that they put a clause in lease-deed that if a property owner will fail to ensure adequate safety in lift to users, it is empowered to take appropriate action.

Two weeks ago, in another incident, people were trapped in a commercial tower lift. Because of insufficient regulation in UP' Noida and Ghaziabad unlike Delhi, using lift has become hazardous as most of the lifts has poor maintenance mechanism in place said officials.

"We will investigate this issue as it relates to the people's safety. We will deliberate upon it in detail in meeting and if a decision is taken then we can appoint an official, who will regulate all safety norms with proper monitoring," said OSD.

Noida has 6 Malls, about two dozen commercial and office towers including 200 group housing apartments, which has lifts. And about 300 more highrises are under-construction, which are equipped with lifts.

"Having a competent regulatory authority that monitors maintenance and safety measures of a company that runs lifts, is of urgent requirement in Noida because Lift companies are playing with people's lives. In Greater Noida last year a man had got killed in Lift," said a Noida based RP Sharma a Noida based social activist.

The chief town planner and architect- VA Devpujari is likely to issue notices and a meeting is likely to take place to discuss the Lift maintenance issue.
Officials said many realtors do not rope in a competent Lift maintenance agency to earn more and ended-up risking people's lives.
