Vehicles owners can now port registration numbers of their old vehicles to new ones for a fee. The Uttar Pradesh government has provided the facility under the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicles (20th Amendment) Rules, 2016.
The amendment states that the registration number of an old non-transport vehicle, owned for three consecutive years by its owner, can be transferred to a new vehicle purchased by the owner for a fee of Rs 25,000.
“Apart from the registration number portability, we are also awaiting directions from the transport department about certain guidelines on transfer of registration number. The notification will come into force from the date of publication in the Gazette,” Kamal Gupta, assistant regional transport officer at Ghaziabad, said.
At present, a number that has already been assigned cannot be assigned to any other vehicle, even if it is cancelled.
The amendment will also help those who wish to use the registration numbers of their old vehicles to their new ones and also help generate additional revenue for the transport department.
A similar number portability system is already in place in Haryana since 2000 for a nominal fee of Rs 500. However, vehicles that are more than 15 year old and cannot be registered in the state do not qualify.
Apart from the registration number portability in UP, transport department officials also said they had plans to allot the VIP numbers through online bidding.
At present VIP numbers like 001, 002, 999, 3333, 7777 are offered to applicants online in a series for Rs 15,000, Rs 7,500, Rs 6,000 and Rs 3,000, depending on the number. Officials said the department can earn more revenue through an online bidding system.
