A 21-year-old woman of a private university was allegedly raped by her friend on Tuesday afternoon at an isolated area near Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida.
A case of rape has been registered at Dankaur police station on the basis of the woman’s complaint. No arrest has been made so far. Police said the assault took place around 12.40pm, after the accused, Arjun Bhati, 25, offered a ride to the woman in his Scorpio outside the university.
Police said the woman lives in Janakpuri, Delhi, and was studying at a private university in Greater Noida.
Police said the woman accepted a ride from Bhati because she did not have any conveyance to reach a bus stop near Galgotia University from where she could get bus to Delhi. According to the complainant, as Bhati was known to her, she accepted his offer to drop her at the bus stop.
The victim sat in the rear with Bhati, while one of his friends drove the vehicle and another sat in the front.
On reaching the bus stop, the driver started speeding. The woman said she tried to raise the alarm but found the windows centrally locked. Police said she was taken to an isolated area near Buddh International Circuit and Bhati allegedly raped her.
According the police complaint, Bhati made his friends get out of the car and raised the music volume in the vehicle. Both his friends kept watch outside the car, while Bhati raped her, the woman said.
The woman, who is pursuing an honours in economics, told police that the glasses of the car were tinted. After the incident, Bhati a resident of Murshadpur in Greater Noida, dropped the woman at the bus stop and threatened her against speaking about the assault.
From the bus stop, the woman called a friend and sought his help. “My friend called other friends of mine and also alerted the women’s helpline. Soon, a police team came to the spot and I told them of my ordeal.”
An investigation officer said they searched the house of the accused in Murshadpur, but he was not there. The officer said that the phone numbers of the accused have been put on surveillance.
The woman said she knew Bhati since last November and he had proposed to her. “I met him at the university last year. We became friends and were in contact on phone as well as on social networking sites. He told me he was a student pursuing BTech.”
However, police said that Bhati was not a student of the university and had completed his BTech from Bengaluru.
Rajpal Tomer, station house officer of Dankaur police station, said, “We registered a case of rape. Our team is working and we are hopeful of arresting the accused soon.”
