A 32-year-old property dealer from Meerut was shot dead in a suspected case of contract killing in Niti Nagar area of Raj Nagar late on Wednesday, just as he was arriving at a relative’s house.
The incident took place when Amit Sharma, who hails from Kankarkhera in Meerut, arrived in his car along with his uncle. They were fired upon by assailants, suspected to be gang members, who were in a car behind them.
“The victim was rushed to a private hospital where he succumbed to injuries. He sustained seven to eight bullet wounds, suspected to be from a 9mm calibre weapon. In all, nearly 15 bullet entry and exit wounds were found in the post-mortem examination. We suspect the role of shooters from a gang whose leader is presently in jail,” said Ashok Sisodia, station house officer (SHO) at Kavi Nagar police station.
“The victim himself had several cases lodged against him in Meerut between 2002 and 2009. The killing could also be the result of a business rivalry,” he said.
Sharma’s uncle Suresh also sustained bullet injuries on his hand. He is stable.
According to police sources, investigators are suspecting the role of one of Sharma’s business associates who owed him nearly Rs 2 crore.
“Nearly two months ago, officials of UP’s special task force got an input that a gang was on the lookout for Sharma. One of his business associates had roped in shooters from the gang through someone. The shooters arrived and carried out the contract killing,” a senior official said.
Following the incident, the victim’s family registered a police complaint at Kavi Nagar police station.
