Residents of Sector 20 are up in arms against the alleged apathy of the Noida authority towards garbage management near their sector, as they claim that the filth has made their life miserable.

Residents claimed that their garbage collection centre near gate number 8 of their residential complex has been in a dilapidated state for more than a year. They said that the collection centre is in poor state due to which residents are forced to throw the garbage all around it.

“Every morning, a heap of garbage lies scattered on the road because there is no proper collection centre for the residents to dump it. This poses a security hazard to thousands of residents who live in this sector. It seems that the Noida authority is least bothered by our health concerns,” Suresh Tiwari, general secretary, Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA), Sector 20, said.

The sector, which is one of the oldest in Noida, houses more than 10,000 people in its 1,680 flats. It is located in the heart of Noida city with busy market places and offices built all around it.

The RWA further claims that it has requested the authority officials several times in the past to reconstruct the dilapidated garbage collection centre, but no action has been taken.

“We have written to the authority several times asking them to re-build the ‘kooda-ghar’ (garbage collection centre), but no action has been taken. Often, the garbage lies in the dilapidated collection centre for days and the waste keeps piling up. We wake up to heaps of garbage every day and it’s nauseating,” Ram Pal Bhati, president, RWA, Sector 20, said.

The RWA further claims that former chief executive officers of Noida authority have also inspected the sector and promised swift action with regard to the garbage collection centre.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, RS Yadav, senior project engineer, Noida Authority, said ,”We have been getting complaints regarding tonnes of garbage in Sector 20. Hence, on Sunday, we cleaned the spot with the help of our staff. Restoration of the garbage collection centre will take time. We have get the tender process out of the way.”
