Work on a six-lane bridge across the Yamuna — between a proposed Delhi Metro bridge and the Kalindi Kunj barrage bridge — may get delayed because the Central Water and Power Research Station in Pune has advised the Noida authority to shift its site.

Experts from Pune Institute say not shifting the site may block the river’s natural flow and cause floods during heavy rain. The bridge is supposed to improve connectivity between Noida and Delhi.

“A panel of experts from the Pune Institute, after its study and subsequent inspection of the Yamuna, has suggested constructing the bridge beneath an under-construction Metro bridge. Earlier, the plan was to construct a bridge between Kalindi Kunj barrage bridge and the proposed Delhi Metro bridge,” said Rajiv Yadav chief project engineer (CPE), Noida authority.

The authority had planned to start work of new bridge by May end. “We were supposed to finalise a detailed project report (DPR) by April end.

The Pune-based institute was to submit its feasibility report to make way for stating the work. But in its hydrological report, experts say that constructing a new bridge between Kalindi Kunj and the proposed Metro bridge may cause floods during heavy rain,” said Yadav.

The authority, which has earmarked a budget of Rs 300 crore, is awaiting the final feasibility report of the institute.

“Once we have the feasibility report, we will tweak our detailed project report accordingly. We will also have a meeting with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials as the bridge will be under the proposed Metro bridge,” said Yadav.

The bridge, apart from serving as an additional link between Noida and Delhi, will also connect the two cities to Faridabad.

The idea of the bridge was conceived during the Bahujan Samaj Party regime but it couldn’t materialise due to the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2012.
