GHAZIABAD: A German Shepherd with the Meerut police helped the Ghaziabad police arrest a 26-year-old man who allegedly raped his six-year-old niece at a village in the Bhojpur police station area.

This is the second time in a week that the 8-year-old sniffer dog, Tima, has proved her mettle. Last week, she traced a 35-year-old rape accused in Niwari.

The accused in the recent case was arrested on Monday. He had allegedly abducted his niece while she was sleeping with her siblings outside her house on the intervening nigh of Saturday and Sunday.

The accused took the girl to a nearby field around 2.30am and raped her. He had gagged her with his towel.

He dropped her back to the house an hour later. Later, the girl’s mother saw her crying and found that she was bleeding. The police was informed and the girl was rushed to a private hospital in Ghaziabad. Her condition is said to be stable.

“After being told about the incident, the police cordoned off the area and started a search. They found a towel and red-coloured slippers at the scene of the crime. We asked the Meerut police for Tima as our sniffer dog, a Doberman, is injured. After smelling the slippers and towel left behind by the accused at the crime scene, Tima roamed around for nearly two hours and finally led us to the house of the accused. She also led us to the washroom where he had washed the bloodstains after the incident,” said Rakesh Kumar Pandey, Ghaziabad superintendent of police.

While Tima was trying to trace the accused, he was instigating villagers against the police. The accused had also gone to the field, pretending to look for evidences to catch the accused. While the accused was in the field, Tima went there smelled him and sat beside him.

“She barked while standing next to him and gave us a hint. When we questioned him, he changed his statements frequently. But he later broke down in front of the villagers. He said he abducted the girl and raped her in the field nearly 500 metres away from the house. After the incident, he dropped her home. Her mother later saw her crying and found that she was bleeding,” Pandey said.

The police said the girl was taken to a private hospital in Ghaziabad and she is stable.

The police said they have recovered the accused’s bloodstained clothes from his house.

The accused is unmarried and had shifted to Ghaziabad from Gujarat around a month ago. He worked as a labourer in Gujarat.

He was arrested for abduction, rape and under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

The police said during questioning, the accused told them that he had consumed alcohol before the incident.

The police said the accused told them that he was under the influence of liquor at the time of the incident.

He said he abducted the girl and took her to the field. She was trying to scream but he gagged her with his towel, the police said.

After raping the girl, he took her back to the house and threatened her against telling anyone about it. The accused told the police that after the incident, he went to his house and slept.

In an earlier incident, Tima had helped the police nab 35-year-old Arun Gupta who on April 1 allegedly lured a six-year-old girl from a marriage ceremony at a locality in the Niwari police station area. The girl was later found raped, strangled and buried near a sugarcane crusher. Gupta was arrested on April 4.
