The police on Monday arrested the tenant of a 40-year-old man who committed suicide on the intervening night of September 23 and 24 on charges of harassment and blackmailing. The wife of the 40-year-old man also shot herself and is critically injured.

An FIR for murder and attempt to murder was filed against the suspect, identified as Yashpal Singh. A suicide note written by the couple blamed the tenant for their action.

The police arrested Yashpal, who is alleged to have forced the woman into an illicit relationship and also threatened to kill her husband. The victim’s brother also alleged that the victim had discussed the threats and forceful possession of the house on various occasions. The FIR also said that Yashpal, his father and brother had shot the woman during the incident.

“Yashpal was arrested in connection with the case. Although the FIR is lodged under sections of murder and attempt to murder, we will thoroughly investigate the suicide notes written by the couple. The sections will be changed as per results of further investigation. His wife is presently under critical care and her statements will also be recorded,” Salmantaj Patil, superintendent of police (city), said.

In one of the two suicide notes, the man wrote that Yashpal had forced his wife into a physical relationship after lacing her drink with a sedative and had been blackmailing them for a while.

Both the husband and his wife stated that they were committing suicide and had signed the suicide note before the man allegedly consumed poison and his wife shot and injured herself with a .32 calibre licensed pistol.

“The bullet pierced her ear and got stuck in her throat. She is under critical care but is stable. More operations will be undertaken in the meantime. We are also awaiting her statements once she recovers. Yashpal was the one who took the duo in a Scorpio car to various hospitals before my brother died. He could have saved the man had he driven straight to a super speciality hospital,” a cousin of the 40-year-old man said.

The woman is a pradhan of a village in Aligarh and her husband was a former pradhan, who was running a chemical trading firm in Ghaziabad.
