‘UP govt soft on land mafia’

The waqf board-appointed Hazrat Syed Bhureshah Committee on Tuesday alleged that the Samajwadi Party government in UP was sheltering the sand and land mafia.

“SP workers have encroached upon about 30 bighas (7.5 hectares) of waqf land. The land was meant for a burial ground, a dargah and a centre for recreation activities for the minority community,” said Qadir Khan Jayswal, secretary of the committee.

News reports on Monday had quoted the committee, saying the waqf board had given a clean chit to suspended IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal in connection with the demolition of a wall of an under-construction mosque.

The committee had lodged an FIR, in Dankaur police station, against the land mafia on May 17, 2012.

On June 24, 2013, then sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Sadar area Durga Shakti Nagpal had issued notices to officials concerned. “Nagpal’s action not only annoyed his staff but also local SP leaders. Before her (Nagpal), no government official bothered to take action against the land mafia during the rule of SP, which pretends to safeguard the interests of Muslims. The SP is only sheltering mafia and giving a religious colour to its inefficient governance,” said Jayswal.Nagpal had directed officials to furnish details related to encroached waqf land on July 10, but nothing happened, said committee members.
