Heavy rain on Saturday caused waterlogging across Noida. Residents were forced to stay indoors and reschedule their engagements due to long traffic snarls and inaccessible roads.
Commuters were trapped on NH-24 near Chhijarsi, Model Town, Sector 12/22 intersection, near the Noida stadium. The traffic jam around stadium lasted for more than three hours.
“The traffic moved at a snail’s pace. It was perhaps a signal fault that caused the jam. The traffic police arrived very late at the spot to manage the traffic,” Sunil Singh, a commuter, said.
Heavy waterlogging was witnessed near DND Flyway, Film City in Sector 16, roads in sectors 52, 61 and 63.
“I instructed the Noida authority to clear drains and fix potholes before the monsoon, to minimise inconvenience to the residents. I will check the action-taken report on Monday,” NP Singh, district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar, said.
Residents of Sector 61 said that some parts of their colony got marooned.
“At Mansarovar Society in Sector 61, the open space was filled with rainwater. We had no way to reach the main road without cars. Roads outside the society were also heavily waterlogged. This is a perennial issue and we have learnt to live with it,” Pooja Singh of Sector 61 said.
“The lane in front of my house, till my doorstep, was filled with water up to the ankle level. The water level recedes slowly because the drainage system is faulty. We requested the Noida authority to clean drains in April but it has not been done till date,” Raghunath of Sector 52 said.
Parks and roads in sectors 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 20 and 21 were also waterlogged and remained inaccessible. The rains also caused potholes at several places.
“Dadri-Surajpur-Chhalera Road has gone from bad to worse following the recent rains as several big potholes have appeared and are causing traffic jams. Potholes have surfaced on some roads in Sector 62 as well,” a traffic constable said.
