PM’s advisor Nair plays key role
Contrary to speculations after his shift from principal secretary to advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, TKA Nair still plays a key role in the PMO.
His successor Pulock Chatterjee holds regular meetings in Nair’s room and he continues to give inputs on management of politically sensitive issues. He also looks after the progress of key development initiatives and continues to be one of the most trusted lieutenants of the Prime Minister, according to sources..
PM’s recent foreign visits create record
The Prime Minister’s recent foreign visit to two countries also perhaps created a record of sorts.
It is probably for the first time that a Prime Minister has visited two capitals where the Indian Ambassadors happen to be husband and wife. When Dr Manmohan Singh reached Tokyo, he was received by our envoy, Ms Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa.
Again when he arrived at Bangkok, Mr Anil Wadhwa the Indian ambassador greeted him.
Both Anil and Deepa are IFS officers of 1979 batch. The couple have two sons.
DOPT seeks applications for information commissioners
The Department of Personnel and Training has sought application for the appointment of three information commissioners in the Central Information Commission subject to a final decision of the Supreme Court. The apex court is considering whether the commission should have judicial members or not along with expert members to decide on Right To Information appeals. Considering that the court's view can have implications, the DoPT has made it clear that appointments would happen in light of the court's decision.
Frequent transfers ail ministries
While Home and Defence ministries have a fixed term for secretaries, several ministries such as Ministry for Heavy Industries have witnessed frequent transfer of their secretaries. At least four secretaries have changed in the last three years with the latest being MF Faroqui, who has been appointed as secretary telecom. The frequent transfers of secretaries happen in smaller ministries because those appointees are not interested in working there and keep looking for other postings in high profile ministries.
