India opened its medals tally at the Rio Paralympics on Friday with Mariyappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati winning gold and bronze, respectively, in the men’s high jump T42 event.
Thangavelu’s best jump of 1.89m won him the gold while Bhati clinched the bronze with a best effort of 1.86m, the same as USA’s Sam Grewe, who took the silver.
Sharad Kumar, however, was unable to make it a third Indian on the podium, after his best jump of 1.77m fetched him sixth place. The fourth- and fifth-placed athletes also managed 1.77m.
The two medals take India’s medal tally across all Paralympic Games to 10 medals. And Thangavelu’s gold is the nation’s third at the Games.
