Viswanathan Anand will open his defence of the World Chess Championships match against Boris Gelfand of Israel with white pieces at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow on Friday.

The Indian Grandmaster, hoping to win his fifth World title here by this month end, drew white colour in the small opening and draw ceremony that took place at the Mikhail Vrubel’s hall of Russia’s top museum.

The match comprises 12 games with the Indian playing with white pieces in the first, third and fifth games. The sequence of colours will be reversed in the seventh game with Gelfand playing with white.
