Highlight Story

After attracting over 300,000 fans last year, this season’s Volkswagen Polo Night Race on the streets of Colombo got off to a encouraging start on the first practice session on Friday. The grid includes six Indian and four Sri Lankan drivers, the qualification and the main races were held late on Saturday night.

This year, the track length has been extended. The specially re-laid street circuit, is a good mix of fast, medium and slow corners. Being a street race, it’s a little dusty and drivers are improving with each lap. Angad Singh Matharoo (from Chandigarh) and Munjal Savla (from Mumbai), Polo R Cup drivers who raced in Colombo last year, set the pace in the practice session on Friday. The qualification was to be held on Friday, but was postponed to Saturday night.

Sanam wins title

Dharwad: Davis Cupper Sanam Singh continued his winning streak bagging his second title of the circuit, beating Tamil Nadu's Ram Kumar Ramanathan 6-2, 7-6(4) in the singles final of the $10,000 ITF Dharwad Open Men’s Futures tennis which concluded at DDTA courts here Saturday.

Sanam, last week, won in Davangere as well. This triumph fetched him $1,300 prize money and 18 points while Ram Kumar, who made his maiden final received $900 besides collecting 12 points.

US Open adds a day
New York: The U.S. Open tennis tournament is moving the women's final to Sunday and men's final to Monday in 2013, building in a day of rest ahead of each title match for the first time. The USTA, which runs the Grand Slam event played in New York, announced the changes Friday -- but only for next year.

A decision about 2014 and beyond probably will come after the 2013 tournament.
