The national cycling coach was crushed to death by a speeding car on Noida-Greater Noida expressway on Tuesday morning. According to the police, Ruma Chatterjee, 51, was riding along with 22 members of the Indian junior road cycling team at Noida-Greater Noida expressway when the accident occurred.

She was on a motorbike and was riding behind the cyclists at around 6am near sector 137 when a speeding Swift Dzire came from behind and hit her. She was taken to Kailash Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

The accident took place when she was returning to Delhi. The driver of the Dzire, which was a Meru cab, fled the spot leaving the car behind. The police have registered an FIR at Surajpur police station in Greater Noida against the unidentified driver.

"We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving," said Brijesh Singh, superintendent of police. "He will be arrested soon."

Chatterjee was from Kolkata and leaves behind her 77-year-old mother and five sisters. She was a national champion.
