Sepak Takraw, the acrobatic foot volleyball which is hugely popular in Southeast Asia, is expected to make a splash in India when the Superseries, the game’s biggest series, is held in the capital from August 29-September 1.

In all, 14 countries will participate. The 12-team men’s competition will be led by holders Thailand and will include Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan and United States as well as Iran. Eight nations will be seen in act in the women’s category. India will participate in both sections of the competition to be held in the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Yogender Singh Dahiya, the Sepak Takraw federation of India (STFI) secretary-general, said the tournament will help popularise the game in the country. “India’s performance over the years has played a key role in the Super Series coming here. In the Super Series 2011/12 edition, the men’s team qualified for the semis.”

The India teams were selected on basis of performances in the national championships, where Manipur were the winners. The second leg will be played in Bangkok from September 26-29 and the third leg in Kota Kinabalau, Malaysia from October 29-November 3.
