The game of hockey is set to undergo changes on the lines of the Euro Hockey League and Hockey India League that will help improve the overall game while also increasing the fan experience. In fact, these rules were first implemented in India in the Premier Hockey League in 2005.
The new rules announced by FIH, on Thursday, will be applicable to the Champions Trophy, World League Round 2, and World League semifinal and final, all continental Olympic qualifying events as of September 1, 2014 as well as the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The reaction from players has been mixed. While terming the changes ‘commercially good’ for the game, Former India skipper Dhanraj Pillai claimed that it would not benefit Indian hockey.
