Some go shopping, others go on a holiday. Saina Nehwal does it the yummy way. Celebrating a victory for the world No 5 means just one thing - ice cream!
"I have 100g of vanilla ice cream waiting for me," she told HT from Basel, hours after retaining the Swiss Open, which ended her year-long wait for a title.
Not many know that she has a tendency to put on weight quickly. That's why she makes a conscious effort to stay away from ice cream and other lip-smacking treats which the world calls junk food.
But every time she wins a tournament, she allows herself to a generous helping of whichever flavour she can lay her hands on.
Saina, who celebrated her 22nd birthday on Saturday, a day before the final, said it was a simple affair as they were in the middle of the tournament.
"But during the final, fellow players and fans shouted slogans (of her birthday). I had lots of chocolates, it was a fun day," she said.
The victory was special as it came against a top-five ranked player.
Saina was worried that if they (Chinese) keep winning all the tournaments this year, they would start feeling that they are "unbeatable".
"This is the Olympic year, and if I do not win against the Chinese, they will be sure that they are unbeatable. So in this tournament, I overpowered two of them," she said.
She will be in the Capital a month later for India's marquee event, the India Open Super Series. Another opportunity for her to savour some more ice cream in New Delhi's blistering heat?
