Infighting among the officials of the Netball Federation of India (NFI) could seriously hamper the development of the sport in the country.
Armed with the Delhi High Court stay order, Hari Om Kaushik, an official of the Haryana Netball Association, is all set to halt the annual general body meeting of the national body to be held under the leadership of BL Sharma at Vijayawada on Sunday.
Kaushik, who is also the vice-president of the national body, has alleged that as per the NFI constitution, Sharma cannot give the go-ahead for elections. "People who are aspiring to become office-bearers," says Kaushik, "have lost the eligibility for key posts as per government guidelines," he added.
Sharma, when contacted, said the meeting of the federation (his faction) would be held as per schedule. Denying that his faction was overlooking the sports ministry's guidelines on tenure, Sharma said: "The ministry is sending its observer. So, there shouldn't be a problem."
It's not the first time NFI officials have been involved in a struggle to control the federation.
Before to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, infighting among the NFI office-bearers saw the ministry intervening and directing the IOA to constitute an ad-hoc panel to run the federation.
