Natasha Palha and Nova Patel created a flutter on the opening day of the $10,000 ITF women's meet at DLTA. They ousted third-seeded Shweta Rana and Garima Vatwani 7-5, 6-4 in the first round of the doubles.
However, in the singles, Patel was tamed by Korea's Da Hye Kim. Kim managed to win 7-6 (4), 6-4 after a long hard first round battle. Ankita Bhatia was also shown the door by eighth-seeded Jessica Sabeshinskaja of Germany. Bhatia lost 0-6, 3-6. In the last singles of the day, Nehel Sahni was beaten 0-6, 3-6 by Manisha Foster of Great Britain.
Akhil in quarters
Akhil Kumar gave a resounding start to India's boxing campaign in the Arafura Games, advancing to the quarterfinals with a thumping win in the opening round of the event in Darwin, Australia on Monday.
Akhil, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist from the 2006 edition in Melbourne, beat Marescot Michael 21-6. The 29-year-old took a 7-0 lead before his rival tried to stage a fight-back but the Indian was so dominant that he ensured that the scoreline showed the difference. “I used the uppercuts for most of my scoring. The bout was pretty easy in the end.”
