Rugby vs Cricket on DU ground

The Delhi University cricket ground has a new face. The venue, that so far hosted local cricket games, will witness gruelling and action-packed battles between some of the greatest rugby teams in the world during the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

With renovation work expected to be over by January-end, the Capital will get its first dose of the sport in April when foreign teams come down for an international tournament.

Rubgy India president Pramod Khanna, who flew in from Mumbai on Sunday to assess the venue, said the event will help serve as a trial run for the venue.

“We are trying to work out the dates for the event. The Scottish team is coming down this October to get acclimatised to Indian conditions. The event in April will test the venue and its facilities.”

The venue that has a capacity of 10,000 will have temporary stands that will be dismantled after the 2010 Games. Sources also say the Delhi University wants its cricket ground back after the Games.

“They (Delhi University) have made it very clear they do not want the ruby field after the Games. It’s sad because rugby won’t leave its legacy behind,” said a senior official in Rugby India who did not wish to be named. However, Director of Physical Education, Delhi University, JS Naruka, feels things could change.

“Cricket will most probably return to the ground after the 2010 CWG, but personally, I think a lot will depend on how popular rugby becomes after the Games. If it becomes popular, we might reserve the field for rugby in future,” Naruka said.
