India beat Australia 4-1 in their second group match to cement their berth in the quarterfinals of the Thomas Cup at Kuala Lumpur’s Putra Stadium on Tuesday. The men’s team, however, had already qualified for the next stage on Monday after Australia lost both their ties.

In Uber Cup, India lost 1-4 to South Korea yet moved to the knockout stage as the second team from Group D on account of their victory against South Africa in the first match.

The top two teams from each group qualify for the knockout stage.

The men’s team will next take on Indonesia while the women will play top seed China, according to the draw released after the league round.

Earlier, the men had lost 1-4 to Indonesia in their first round group clash. They needed a victory against Australia to move ahead. Parupalli Kashyap gave India the lead with a 21-8, 21-10 win over Jeff Tho in the first match and Arvind Bhat doubled it by a win over Chad Whitehead 21-6, 21-12. Gurusaidutt kept up the tempo to hand India an unassailable 3-0 lead.

India’s top doubles combination of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas, however, went down to Glenn Warfe and Ross Smith 20-22, 18-21.

In the second doubles match, Akshay Dewalkar and V. Diju went past Raj Veeran and Whitehead 21-12, 21-17.

In Uber Cup, Saina Nehwal saw off a strong challenge from Seung Hee Bae to win 20-22, 21-18 and 21-17 in the first match.

In doubles, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa went down to Hyo Jung Lee and Min Jung Kim 11-21, 13-21.
