PV Sindhu was elated to make it to the main draw of the women’s singles on Tuesday. On Wednesday, she caused the only upset of the Jaypee Cup Syed Modi International Grand Prix badminton tournament, brushing aside eighth seed Sayali Gokhale 21-17, 21-10.
For another young qualifier, Juhi Dewangan, managing even seven points — including two in the second game — against top shuttler Saina Nehwal was enough to make her happy. Juhi wasn’t expecting to open her account against the World No. 7 but she gave off her best in the 17-minute battle before losing 5-21, 2-21.
Earlier, there were scary moments for Arup Sridhar against Prakash Jolly in a second round match. After winning the first game 21-13, Sridhar trailed by two points in the second game and the lead was 11-6. But a ‘negative hit’ by Jolly allowed him to reorganise and win five points to level scores.
